Lyrics

The Fire Warden (capo 5th fret in G)

Em C G D
World War II, in great London Town,
Six hundred planes each night raining death down.
Firebombs at first will light their way.
A fire warden’s shift won’t end till it’s day.

Sundown brings sirens. The shelter’s packed tight.
Blackout so pure, no hand torch in sight.
Christmas in the Tube. Better save your spot.
The Blitz will continue, like it or not.

Chorus
C G D
Up to the rooftops again.
Pouring on water and sand.
C G D Em
Fire from the sky and the city alight.
C D G
So up to the rooftops again.

Jerry still targets churches and homes,
Hospitals and my St. Paul’s dome.
Parachute mines hang in the street
Then explode and kill those still on their feet.
chorus

We have no planes that can fly in the dark.
The Yanks sit on gunpowder and wait for a spark.
But we’ll put out the fires and do what we must.
Antiaircraft guns roar and in each other we’ll trust.

But I’ve never seen it bad as last night.
1,000 incendiaries on this cathedral alight.
Blood red smoke held the city all night.
But dawn showed that St. Paul’s was somehow alright.
Chorus
